In this video, which is sure to make your blood boil, a West Midlands Police officer is caught attempting to frame a citizen journalist for drinking and driving at an anti-fracking protest. Early in the video, the officer can be heard asking the journalist if he has had anything to drink, to which he replied “No, I’ve had tea this morning”. Shortly thereafter, the officer is caught lying on camera, insisting to his fellow officers that the journalist had admitted to having two drinks that morning.
Some commenters have pointed out the possibility that the officer misheard the journalist, thinking he had said “I’ve had two this morning” rather than “tea”, however the officer’s continued insistence on the false claim, even to the point of misleading the other policemen at the scene, casts doubt on his credibility. Setting the politics of fracking aside, there is no excuse for a UK police officer to detain a journalist on false charges, especially as a means to quell political protest in a free society.
West Midlands Police can be contacted for complaint here.
